Storm water run-off or Non Point-source pollution is the leading cause of degradation in our lakes streams and coastal waters. This pollution has a direct effect on human health by degrading food sources such as fish and shellfish as well as making our recreational areas unhealthy for humans and the species which live in them.
Wetland species make up a vital part of the human food chain either directly by eating fish or shellfish or indirectly by fish or seaweed products used as feed/fertilizer for other foodstuffs fro human consumption.
Contaminated storm-water can also get into human water supplies by seeping through soil. Contaminants then must be filtered, and eventually low levels must be “tolerated” on municipals wells. Anyone who reads the reports from water testing on Long Island knows that there are low levels of contaminants in our drinking water which are “below action level”
