Green Sidewalks for Educational Facility
June-July 2010
The Project:
Western Suffolk BOCES, with architect Ira Bernson of BB&S of Patchogue, NY, hired Excav to replace aging concrete sidewalks with new FilterPave™ recycled glass porour pavement sidewalks.
The sidewalks stretch around a large portion of the BOCES building, including the most heavily foot-trafficked area.
With FilterPave™'s high level of porosity, runoff from the roof of the building won't stand on the sidewalk surface - which prevents icing in the winter season.
The Work:
Excav handled the demolition and removal of the original sidewalks, prepared a sub-base of gravel atop a layer of filter fabric (to filter out toxicities) and finished the paving area with FilterPave recycled glass porous pavement.
Excav replaced the wooden ties that line the sidewalks to ensure longevity (and improve the aesthetics).
Finally, Excav applied hydro seeding to areas where grass had either not grown or had been damaged.
The project was completed within roughly a week and a half.
